Tell us about a volunteer you appreciate. What does this person do for the genealogical community? How has he or she touched your heart? This is your chance to show some love for those who selflessly give their time to family history.
“Tell us about a volunteer you appreciate.” Only one? There is so much genealogy data available online these days. Indexes, images, documents… the list goes on and on. And a great amount of this data has been researched and posted by volunteers. Ours is an avocation of caring and sharing.
One such group of volunteers can be found at Find-A-Grave. Here countless volunteers have inventoried and photographed cemeteries and headstones from all around the world. Not many of us would be able to travel to a far-off state or country in search of an ancestor’s headstone. Find-A-Grave enables us to travel to Great Britain or Ireland or Germany or Minnesota to get that photo of our third-great-grandfather’s headstone, without even leaving our living rooms! And with gasoline pushing $4/galloon…
If you would like to become a Find-A-Grave volunteer like me and Pay It Forward, join the Find-A-Grave community right here!
52 Weeks of Abundant Genealogy by Amy Coffin is a series of weekly blogging prompts (one for each week of 2012) that invite genealogists and others to discuss resources in the genealogy community including websites, applications, libraries, archives, genealogical societies and more. You do not have to be a blogger to participate. If you do not have a genealogy blog, write down your thoughts on your computer, or simply record them on paper and keep them with your files.
