Houston, Texas city directories online!

Just a quick “Did you know”… The Houston Public Library Digital Archives has a nice collection of late-1800′s/early-1900′s Houston City Directories digitalized, online and available as pdf downloads for your viewing and research pleasure!

I just found this site and am currently downloading the 1913 edition in hopes of finding my great-grandfather John T Stanley or my great-grandmother to-be Marie Mistrot Carrico, who were married in Houston in March, 1913.

Treasure Chest Thursday: Granddad’s box

My grandfather Miles Francis Stanley II worked as a draftsman for General Dynamics in Fort Worth. General Dynamics built planes for the Air Force, among other things.

After Granddad died in 1970, my aunts gathered up some of his drawings and used them to create nick-nack boxes and wall-hangings, then gave them to each of us grandkids.

This is my 40-year-old box. Kinda scratched and dinged, but still in use. And the drawings are still clear and show the talent he had. I remember when we were kids and went to my grandparent’s house, Granddad was always “doodling”, drawing and writing.
