Women’s History Month, Day 5: Eloped!

My grandparents met as students at the old Central High School in Fort Worth back in the 1930’s. Miles Francis Stanley, Jr graduated in June of 1932, and began work as a painter for his father, John Thomas Stanley, building manager of the Fort Worth National Bank.

Charley Belle Rogers, a year younger, graduated in 1933 and began to seriously consider her future life with Miles Stanley. Money was tight in the Depression Era, so a lavish wedding would not be possible. What to do?

As New Years 1935 approached, the high school sweethearts were still apart, but not for long…

Accompanied by friends J K Daniels and his wife, Miles and Charley Belle took the 2-hour drive north to Marietta, Oklahoma and tied the knot on 31 Dec 1934!
