We as genealogists often run across old photos or books that we may want to use on our websites or in our own writings. But where do we stand legally by using these images or texts? Are they public domain or are they protected by copyright?
I recently discovered a very useful website called Life Hacker: “Tech tricks, tips and downloads for getting things done.” One of today’s posts discusses a simple tool created by the American Library Association, the Digital Copyright Slider. This simple application can quickly show if an image or text is public domain or if you need to get permission from the rights owner to use it.
