Notes from the past…

Decisions, decisions…

But first, a vague sense of panic is slowly engulfing my soul… I found out this evening that the Texas Death Index, 1890-1976 has disappeared from the FamilySearch Record Search site! This database has been a major, huge, gigantic, stupendous….resource for me, as I have literally oodles of ancestors who died in Texas during that time period. Because of this database, I was able to track down my fraternal great-great grandfather, John Spurgeon Carroll, who I thought had fallen off the planet! I have also located several “lesser” relatives. “Say it ain’t so!” I’m crossing my fingers that the database is just off the site for spring cleaning or something, and that it will soon return…quickly!

I was reading Randy’s Seaver’s Genea-Musings blog, and in some recent posts he has discussed the Family Tree Builder genealogy program. I had glimpsed this program several months ago, but just skimmed over it, not really interested. But having read Randy’s comments, I decided to download the free program and give it an in-depth trial. A couple of months ago, I changed from Family Tree Maker to Family Tree Legends, because Legends could do more for me than Maker could. But I have also noticed a few problems with Legends, and I’m not as satisfied as I once was.

So yesterday I downloaded Family Tree Builder and after playing with it a bit, I can see that it has a lot of potential for me! The images are of much better quality and I really like the timeline feature. I haven’t quite figured out how it handles sources, yet. Of note: my Family Tree Legends database in its entirety (all images and sources!) was easily transferred to Family Tree Builder, which is a h-ll of a lot more than Family Tree Maker could do!
