Notes from the past…

"Movin' on up…"

I have graduated from Dinosaur Dial-up to DSL, and I am so excited! One of the first things I did was to go to the Roots Television site and check out some of their videos. What a great place! I knew the site was there, but could never really enjoy what they had to offer until now. I can also browse census pages in search of those sneaky ancestors, who have been so elusive…until now! I gotcha!
I also have an entry ready for the next Carnival of Genealogy. The topic is: A Tribute to Women. My subject-lady is one of my favorite ancestors, and someone I actually remember, as I was 13 years old when she died. One of my fondest memories of her is when, as a child, I would spend the night at her house. The house was very old and had very high ceilings and the wallpaper was old and peeling off the walls and I loved every bit of that old house! I remember MawMaw, as we grands and greats-grands called her, would make me hot tea with honey. Y-U-M-M-Y! I also remember she had an old rocking chair that she loved to sit in and I recently just realized that I now own that rocking chair! My grandmother (MawMaw’s daughter), now 91, wanted me to have it when she sold her house and went to live with my aunt and uncle a few years ago. I didn’t realize it was the same rocking chair until I found an old photo of MawMaw sitting in a rocker. The light suddenly went on in my head, I turned around from my desk, and there was the rocker is my living room. It was holding my cat instead of my great-grandmother, but it’s still the same chair!
I would like you all to meet my great-grandmother, Mary Tennessee Turner. Near the bottom of her page is photo of her in the (my!) rocking chair, taken about 1968.
