Notes from the past…

the nitty-gritty!

I have saved hundreds of genealogy files to my hard drive. Census images, World War I and II registration cards, photographs, ect…I am having to rename (if necessary) each one, then move it to the appropriate surname folder. A huge job! I wish I had set up this filling system on Day 1! I think it will take me weeks to finish this. I have already run across several that I don’t even know which family they belong to! I didn’t realize I had gathered so much data over the past 4 years. Then, when I get all that finished, I have to update my Bluebonnet Country Genealogy Family Tree Maker database with said files. This job just may take all summer! Then…..when I finish with the computer part of this task, I have to reorganize my “real time” filing cabinet. I keep duplicates (the originals) of a lot of files, one for the computer and one for the filing cabinet. 2 separate systems is a pain, but I have to do something with all my original documents and photographs!
I have 1 bit of good news. A couple of years ago I bought a 128MB flash drive for my genealogy data. It has a security program which requires a password to open it. Well…you guessed it, I forgot the password. So I thought it was useless. Anyway, last night I was playing with a new USB drive management program, and, to make a long story short, I can now use the 128MB USB drive! It is, of course, wayyyy toooo small for my current mass of data, but I was able to copy my Bluebonnet Country Genealogy web site files to it, so now they are backed up “off-site” and safe. That’s is if I don’t lose the flash drive!
